Alkaline Pumpkin-Coconut Soup

Not only should you be drinking alkaline ionized water to maintain a healthy, alkaline body, but you should also try to eat a greater percentage of alkaline foods. Today I’m sharing a delicious recipe for you.  It is really yummy and very appropriate to autumn.

Pumpkin is very alkaline and potatoes are, too. Pumpkins are also rich in potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and fiber, as well as beta-carotene, which is a powerful antioxidant!

alkaline food, coconut, pumpkin, soup

Ingredients:

2-lb pumpkin
6 cups of water (preferably alkaline ionized water)
1 cup of coconut milk (low- or full-fat)
5 oz of potatoes
2 large onions
3 oz of leeks
1 handful of fresh parsley
1 pinch of nutmeg
1 pinch of cayenne pepper
1 tsp of sea salt
4 tbsp of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil

Directions:

Chop up pumpkin, potatoes, onions and leeks into small pieces.

Heat the olive oil in a big pot and sauté the onion for several minutes until translucent.

Add water, pumpkin, potatoes and leeks to the pot with the onions and oil. Boil until very tender.

Add coconut milk and, using an immersion blender, blend until smooth and creamy.

Season with salt and cayenne pepper and then add the parsley. Enjoy!

I will be sharing alkaline recipes more often for you to try. When you try it, snap a picture and share it along with your comment either on here or on my Facebook page. I would love to know how it turns out!

What is Really in Your Tap Water?

This blog is coming to you from St. Louis, Missouri. We have pretty decent tap water, which is actually why the Busch beer brewery is located in downtown St. Louis. However, let’s take a look at some common things found in most tap water.

alkaline water, toxic, toxins, water ionizer

Lead
Approximately 98% of all household pipes have lead in them. This lead leaches into the water and is consumed. Lead is toxic to the body and excess lead is stored in the brain. Long-term exposure to lead in children leads to significant brain damage as well as development damage.

Chloramine
Chloramine is a disinfectant and is said to be a safe chemical. But there is a warning that it should not be used in fish tanks as it kills them and shouldn’t be used on animals.

Asbestos
Asbestos is a carcinogen and can be found naturally or in asbestos-lined pipes. It is so small that most water treatment centers don’t filter it out.

Chlorine
Chlorine was first used in tap water to kill water-borne diseases such as cholera. But, chlorine is also found to be unhealthy for humans. It also mixes with organic material such as bark and produces carcinogens.

Fluoride
This chemical was originally used to help cut down on tooth decay. Over time it was found that children exposed to tap water were developing fluorosis. This condition causes white streaking and spots on teeth and in some extreme cases it even causes cracking of the teeth. According to the National Research Council “it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” And in literature commissioned by the EPA, fluoride has been listed among 100 chemicals for which there is “substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity.”

This is why I am so passionate about educating everyone about the benefits of a water ionizer. Not only do they ionize the water and make it alkaline, but they can also filter out these toxic substances.

The Top 5 Myths of Water Ionizers

I am going to debunk 5 myths people commonly bring up about water ionizers. You may have encountered some of these when family and friends have come over and asked what that thing was on your counter.

debunking myths of ionized water

     1.      Water ionizers actually split the water molecule.

Water ionizers don’t split the water molecules. That takes a lot of power and if it did, you wouldn’t be getting a glass of water from your ionizer, but instead hydrogen and oxygen gases. The hydrogen and oxygen molecules are very solidly bound together and aren’t separated in your ionizer.

     2.      Kangen water is different than alkaline water.

Kangen water is just a company name created by the Enagic Corporation. Their water ionizers ionize the water in the same way any other water ionizer does.

     3.      Water ionizers make artificial alkaline water.

The way you make artificially alkaline water is by adding slaked lime to the water. This is a common practice of city water treatment plants. They do this to raise the pH of the water. This practice has been in use since the 1890s to help with the corrosion of pipes.

     4.      You can get the same benefits from alkaline water found in stores.

The antioxidant property of alkaline water doesn’t last very long, not more than a couple of days if stored properly. So even if the bottled alkaline water you picked up at the store was alkaline water when bottled, I can guarantee you it no longer is when you get it home.

     5.      Alkaline water will make me too alkaline.

Most people in today’s society are far too acidic. Only in extremely rare cases does someone who is already very alkaline become too alkaline when drinking ionized water. But this is an ultra rare occurrence and nothing to be concerned about.

What other myths have you heard about alkaline water? I would be more than happy to dispel them. Leave them in the comments below.
