Staying Hydrated in Cold Weather

It may seem like you don’t need as much water in the winter as you do in the summer - you’re cold and definitely not sweating; you maybe aren’t exercising as much or spending as much time outside. But, did you know you can get just as dehydrated, if not more, in the winter?

When your body is cold it has certain mechanisms to help keep it warm and regulate its temperature. It constricts blood vessels, which raises blood pressure. This in turn causes the kidneys to produce more urine so there is slightly less blood volume and less pressure in the veins and arteries. This loss of fluids contributes to dehydration. Also, when you see your breath outside that is steam coming from your mouth. Your body is losing moisture through breathing and this also aids in dehydration if you aren’t replacing this moisture with enough quality fluids throughout the day. Another way you may be losing water, which sometimes goes unnoticed is when it’s very dry outside. If you do happen to sweat it evaporates very quickly, so you may not even realize you are perspiring at all.

The Most Important Reason to Stay Hydrated

cold, flu, ill, alkaline water, alkaline ionized water, cold season, flu season

The number one reason to stay hydrated during the cold months: cold and flu season. With a body that is well hydrated it can easily move toxins, bacteria and viruses through the body. It will keep the digestive tract healthy and able to move waste products through the body efficiently. It will also keep the kidneys functioning well so they can play their part in moving waste through the body. When you’re hydrated your body is also better able to absorb the nutrition from your food, which only helps in fighting off illnesses.

With alkaline ionized water you are better hydrated with the smaller clusters of molecules making up the water. Your cells can more easily absorb the water and keep the cells pure and functioning properly. Also, when the acidic waste builds up in your body, the alkaline ionized water flushes them out, all while keeping your body alkaline.

Tips for Staying Hydrated Through the Winter

When consuming diuretics (foods, liquids, medication) that pull water out of your body, such as caffeine, alcohol and some medications, I can’t stress enough that you need to balance these with an equal or greater amount of water. And try to steer clear from consuming too much caffeine and alcohol.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies! They generally have a good amount of water and this water content counts, too, towards the amount of water you should consume daily.

Try to cut back on sodium-laden foods. Processed foods and foods from most restaurants are overly salted and can dehydrate you.

Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercising! Even if you don’t feel sweaty! This will help keep your body hydrated, cut down on muscle cramps, as well as fatigue.
And remember, drink enough water to keep your urine relatively clear, with just a slight yellow hue to it. For most people this is around 8 glasses a day. However, I strongly urge you to drink half your weight in fluid ounces of water. A 200-pound person should therefore drink 100 ounces of water each day. This can be adjusted based on activity level, if you’re currently experiencing vomiting or diarrhea (which dehydrate you), have been sick recently, etc. But taking a peek after you use the bathroom is a good way to tell whether you’re getting enough water.

Here are some more pertinent articles I have written over the years that cover this subject from different angles. Check them out to get further enlightened on this subject:

Is the Paleo Diet Alkaline or Acidic?

The Paleo diet is catching on like wild fire. Although it’s been around since the 1970s it is currently becoming more and more popular. Search “Paleo” on Pinterest and you will find thousands of pins directing you to thousands of websites that promote the diet, give recipes and tips on how to succeed with the diet, tell you why you should live the Paleo lifestyle and others’ success with switching to a Paleo regimen. But is it alkaline? If you are eating meat as a staple wouldn’t that make it more acidic than alkaline? Let’s go over this in more detail.

Foods Allowed/Not Allowed on the Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet generally consists of meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, healthy fats/oils, spices and herbs.

salad, alkaline, acid, alkalinity, alkaline food

Foods that are not allowed on the Paleo diet are cereal grains, legumes (including peanuts), dairy, refined sugars, potatoes, processed foods, salt or refined vegetable oils.

Alkaline Vs. Acidic Foods

While animal protein is a main constituent of the Paleo lifestyle, so is an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. This balance of acid/alkaline foods keeps your body at an optimal level. Foods such as grains and sugars are way more acidic than animal protein and raise the acidity of the body far more than meat.

Part of the Paleo diet is also a high fat content. In fact, you eat more calories in fat than you do carbohydrates or protein. And fat is a very alkalizing food. Fat acts as an alkaline buffer, much the same way as insulin. When you load the body with a meal full of sugars and simple carbs your body releases insulin in order to neutralize the spiked levels of sugar. Good fats do the same thing!

Alkaline Water and the Paleo Diet

In order to bolster your new Paleo lifestyle I highly recommend drinking plenty of alkaline ionized water each day. The Paleo diet calls for roughly 7 servings of leafy egreen vegetables. And in case this doesn't happen every day, I highly recommend drinking plenty of ionized water. This will aid in keeping your body alkaline and in ensuring the toxins are flushed out of your body as you switch over to a more clean diet.

How to Tell if You’re Dehydrated

We all reach for something to drink when we are feeling thirsty, but did you know that by the time you’re thirsty you are already dehydrated? I will go over with you today how you can tell if you’re dehydrated and how you can remedy the situation most effectively.

dehydration, dehydrated, water, alkaline water, ionized water, alkaline ionized water, thirsty

Signs of Dehydration

Here are some common signs of being mildly dehydrated:
      1.      Dry, sticky mouth
      2.      Dry skin
      3.      Headache
      4.      Constipation
      5.      Thirst
      6.      Decreased urine output
      7.      Tiredness
      8.      Dizziness/lightheaded

Here are some more serious signs of being dehydrated:

      1.      Extreme thirst
      2.      Excessively dry mouth and mucus membranes
      3.      Fever
      4.      Rapid breathing
      5.      Low blood pressure
      6.      Sunken eyes
      7.      Little to no urine output. Urine that is passed is very dark.
      8.      Delirium and unconsciousness

Children, the elderly, very active individuals and those who live in high altitudes are more susceptible to suffering from dehydration.

Did you know you can go 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water? That’s true! Water is essential to all life. Reaching for coffee, tea, soda or fruit juice is no replacement for water. In fact, coffee, tea (with caffeine) and soda actually cause dehydration. The caffeine is a natural diuretic and pulls water out of your cells. And most fruit juices contain very little fruit and excess amounts of sugars. These, too, can contribute to dehydration.

Avoid the Effects of Dehydration

By drinking plenty of water you will replenish the water that you expel from your body by sweating, urinating and breathing. You also lose large amounts of water when vomiting, suffering from diarrhea, excessive sweating and when you have a fever.

One good sign that you are getting enough water is the color of your urine. If your urine is dark in color or bright yellow, drink more water. If it is pale yellow or nearly clear, you are probably getting enough water.

Drinking alkaline ionized water is the best way to stay hydrated. When your water comes out of the tap it comes out in clusters of 11-16 H2O molecules. When the water is put through your water ionizer it comes out in clusters of 5-8 water molecules. This makes it easier for your cells to absorb the water leading to better hydration. Read more about that in my article about ionized water

In another article I wrote about the importance of water, I pointed out that water makes up most of the organs and fluids of the body. Here are the percentages of water make-up in each area:

Bones 22%
Muscles 75%
Tissues 75%
Blood 92%
Brain 75%

The kind of water and the quality of that water affects your entire body and how it operates. If you are depleted of the amount of water each system needs in order to do its job properly, you will deal with a myriad of negative results, such as the ones listed above.

I cannot stress how important it is to drink plenty of alkaline ionized water. Most people don’t even realize they are dehydrated and, according to doctors, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. With the popularity of cokes and coffees skyrocketing, not nearly enough of us are getting an adequate supply of water.

I urge you to visit my website, Alkaline Water Plus, and further educate yourself on the power of water and especially the power of alkaline ionized water. I have spent years compiling information, writing articles, doing research and comparisons to help enlighten others on this subject. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, either below, via phone or email.

Alkaline Water, Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

Wow. Quite a title, I know. But, bear with me while I go over how alkaline water and an alkaline diet can help prevent a problem million of men suffer with every day.

Erectile dysfunction, alkaline water, type 2 diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

Globally, roughly 366 million people suffer from Type 2 Diabetes (which, throughout this article I’ll just refer to as “Diabetes.”)

2/3 of those who suffer are men. Men seem to suffer more from this disease due to health and diet.
According to research, half of all men with Diabetes will suffer with some degree of ED and men with Diabetes are 3 times more likely to suffer from ED than a man without Diabetes. This is due to the decrease in blood flow to the organs, such as the brain, kidneys, heart and penis. Diabetes greatly affects the blood vessels and blood flow throughout the body.

So, if 2/3 of the 366 millions Diabetes sufferers are male, that means there are 244 million men in the world that have this disease. Half of those 244 million men, or 122 million males worldwide, will suffer from some degree of ED. And the longer you have had Diabetes, the more you will suffer from ED.

That is a lot of suffering men. But also a lot of partners, too, that undoubtedly deal with this situation.

Alkalinity and Diabetes

The main cause of Diabetes is an acidic diet, consisting of lots of sugary foods and drinks, as well as refined carbohydrates – white flour, instant rice, pasta, bread, etc.

Diabetes can be greatly helped, if not gotten rid of, through a healthy, alkaline diet; weight loss; exercise and alkaline ionized water.

I highly recommend adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet, while eliminating refined carbohydrates and sugars. These two types of foods/drinks are the culprits behind weight gain and Diabetes. They spike your blood sugar way up and contribute to the disease.

I also strongly urge you to invest in a water ionizer. The alkaline ionized water will help alkalize your body while you also help alkalize it with the food you eat. I have known of many cases where Diabetes sufferers drastically cut down on, if not eliminated their medication by switching to alkaline ionized water and drinking plenty of it.

Adding exercise is the last piece to this regimen. Exercise alone will not rid you of your Diabetes. Weight loss is achieved 80% by the food you eat and 20% by the exercise you do. However, exercise contributes to weight loss and blood flow throughout the body.

Here is another article I wrote on the effects of alkaline ionized water. In that blog there is a video covering diabetic necrosis and the effect obtained with ionized water.

I hope this article has been of help to you. And while you may not suffer from these conditions yourself, share his article with your friends. You never know who is dealing with this disease and dysfunction.

What is Really in Your Tap Water?

This blog is coming to you from St. Louis, Missouri. We have pretty decent tap water, which is actually why the Busch beer brewery is located in downtown St. Louis. However, let’s take a look at some common things found in most tap water.

alkaline water, toxic, toxins, water ionizer

Lead
Approximately 98% of all household pipes have lead in them. This lead leaches into the water and is consumed. Lead is toxic to the body and excess lead is stored in the brain. Long-term exposure to lead in children leads to significant brain damage as well as development damage.

Chloramine
Chloramine is a disinfectant and is said to be a safe chemical. But there is a warning that it should not be used in fish tanks as it kills them and shouldn’t be used on animals.

Asbestos
Asbestos is a carcinogen and can be found naturally or in asbestos-lined pipes. It is so small that most water treatment centers don’t filter it out.

Chlorine
Chlorine was first used in tap water to kill water-borne diseases such as cholera. But, chlorine is also found to be unhealthy for humans. It also mixes with organic material such as bark and produces carcinogens.

Fluoride
This chemical was originally used to help cut down on tooth decay. Over time it was found that children exposed to tap water were developing fluorosis. This condition causes white streaking and spots on teeth and in some extreme cases it even causes cracking of the teeth. According to the National Research Council “it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” And in literature commissioned by the EPA, fluoride has been listed among 100 chemicals for which there is “substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity.”

This is why I am so passionate about educating everyone about the benefits of a water ionizer. Not only do they ionize the water and make it alkaline, but they can also filter out these toxic substances.

Do You Still Feel Dehydrated Even After Drinking Plenty of Water?

There are many of us who drink glass of water after glass of water and still feel dehydrated. You think “I have drunk 5 bottles of water today, but I still feel thirsty!” Well, we know exactly why! Are you ready to find out the answer? Keep reading!

dehydration, drinking water, alkaline water, ionized water

Sulfur and the Health of Your Cells

Your cells need sulfur in order to transport oxygen and water through the cell membrane. When your diet is depleted or lacking sulfur your cell walls are not pliable enough to allow the adequate passing of oxygen and water across the cell wall. This leads to dehydration in the body, among other things.

Our diet today is greatly lacking in this important nutrient. The soil our produce grows in is thoroughly depleted of sulfur. This means the grass the cows are eating is, too.

Alkaline Ionized Water and Hydration

When you drink alkaline ionized water, the smaller clusters of water molecules are far easier for your cells to absorb. This hydrates and oxygenates your cells, while carrying away acidic waste. The water better cleanses your cells of the toxic build up it so badly needs to be rid of.

I’m sure you have smelled the rotten egg odor from well water. This water is rich in sulfur and is actually good for your body. Today’s water in most, if not all, municipalities is stripped of this essential mineral. That, combined with a diet deficient in sulfur, leads to dehydration.

Drinking Alkaline Ionized Water

I cannot stress to you enough just how important it is to invest in an electric water ionizer for yourself, your spouse, your children. Staying hydrated is so very important to your overall health.

Below you will find symptoms of chronic dehydration. See how many of these you and your loved
ones have.

Ashtma and allergies
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
ADD/ADHD
Hot flashes
Osteoporosis
Gout
Kidney stones
Diabetes
Chronic fatigue

Also, if you are waiting until you are thirsty to grab for that glass of water, you are actually waiting too long. You should be drinking water all day long. Even if you just sip it and drink 2-3 ounces at a time. And, remember, a good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. So, if you are 150 pounds you should be drinking 75 ounces of water per day.

I hope his has helped enlighten you on the importance of hydration. Leave your comments/questions below.

Can I Boil or Freeze My Ionized Water?

There are some changes you can make to your ionized water that won’t have drastic effects on its ORP or pH, but there are some changes I don’t recommend you make to your ionized water if you want to keep the good qualities of your water.

Boiling

ionized water, boiling ionized water

I don’t recommend boiling your ionized water. When the ionized water is exposed to air it oxidizes and loses its antioxidant property. Boiling the water oxidizes the water very quickly and so it loses its ORP, making it more acidic.

Microwaving

Maybe you’d like to warm up a cup of water for tea or some such beverage. I tested the temperature of microwaved water up to 108 degrees and found that it didn’t affect the properties of the water that much. So, go ahead and warm up that mug of ionized water for a warm cup of tea or lemon water.

Freezing

stainless steel ice cube tray, ionized water, freezing ionized water

I didn’t find that freezing ionized water had much effect on its good properties. The ORP went down slightly, but not too much. The pH hardly dropped at all. If you, like me, love ice in your water, I suggest getting yourself some stainless steel ice trays, filling them up with ionized water and sticking them in the freezer right away.

Adding Supplements

I highly recommend adding your electrolyte supplements, vitamins and minerals to your ionized water. The micro-clustering of the water helps you absorb even more of the supplement than you would in tap or bottled water.

Body Odor

It’s been hot. Really hot. And like most people I’m sure you’ve noticed the occasional spell of body odor. But, there are many people who deal with excessive body odor on a routine basis. We are going to go over how you can reduce, if not eliminate, your excess body odor naturally.

body odor, ph, alkaline water, acid
Sweating

Sweating is a completely normal bodily function. It is actually how your body cools itself down. However, sometimes a bad odor comes along with the sweating. A strong odor is usually caused by a pH imbalance in the body.

How We Sweat

There are two types of sweat glands. The first is located in areas where there are hair follicles, such as the groin area, the underarms and the scalp. The other kind of sweat gland is located over most of your body’s surface and is what cools your body down. When these latter sweat glands release the salty sweat onto the surface of the skin, the sweat evaporates, cooling you down. The first sweat gland mentioned secretes the substance via the hair follicle. It is naturally odorless, but the bacteria on the skin break down this fluid, thus creating a foul odor.

What Affects the Production of Body Odor?

There are many different factors involved with the smell of your body odor. These include genetics, your diet, where you are in your menstrual cycle (for women), your emotional condition, your health and whether you have an illness, etc.

But one of the biggest contributors to an excessively foul odor is the pH of your body. Sweat is also a function of ridding the body of toxins. When you are too acidic the body attempts to balance your pH by sweating out the acidic waste. If your body was at the optimum level of alkalinity you wouldn’t deal with body odor as much, if at all.

How to Make Your Body More Alkaline

To naturally handle your body odor, instead of masking it with harmful antiperspirants and perfumes, I strongly suggest starting from the inside out. Start eating more alkaline foods, and cutting out acidic ones. And of course get yourself and your family an electronic water ionizer. Start drinking ½ your weight in fluid ounces of quality alkaline ionized water. While you’re waiting for the long-term effects of handling your body odor, you can apply apple cider vinegar to your underarms to kill any bacteria. Or you could apply a thin layer of a baking soda/water paste. Baking soda is great at neutralizing odors and alkalizing.

Here is another more in-depth article on making your body more alkaline:

Also, watch this video where I personally demonstrate testing your body's pH level. I recommend checking your pH level while you work on making yourself more alkaline.

I hope this has been informative! Let me know if you have any questions.

Water and Your Heart

We all know we should be drinking more water. But sometimes the thought of drinking plain, ol’ water doesn’t sound like much fun. But we are going to go over the importance of staying hydrated and how it affects the health of your heart.

Water, ionized water, alkaline water, alkaline ionized water,

Your Heart

The heart is a powerful organ. It beats nearly 100,000 times per day, sending approximately 2100 gallons of blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels, each and every day.

In comparison to all other muscles in the body, the heart is the hardest working one, as it never rests. It is constantly working to keep you alive.

Water and Your Heart

It has been shown that the viscosity (thickness) of your blood is increased if you are dehydrated. This makes the heart’s job harder to do. It has to use more energy to pump the thicker blood through your body.

Being dehydrated also causes your blood to retain more sodium making it harder to pump through your body.

The most common time for someone to have a heart attack is in the morning. Your blood’s viscosity is highest at this time of day after sleeping all night and consuming no water.  This is why I recommend keeping a glass of water on your night stand and drinking 8-16 oz before your feet even hit the floor in the morning. I also suggest drinking a glass just prior to going to sleep.

Alkaline Ionized Water and Your Heart

The heart is the most alkaline-loving organ in your body. It is continuously subjected to oxidation and benefits from both the alkalinity and the antioxidants in alkaline ionized water.

Watch this very short video that shows the huge impact drinking alkaline ionized water has on your blood cells.

For more education on this topic, read my other blog article on this topic: https://alkalinewaterplus.com/blog/how-does-a-water-ionizer-help-you-ward-off-heart-disease/

Staying Hydrated

It is recommended that you drink ½ your weight in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds you should be drinking 100 ounces of water each day.

This should be increased depending on your activity level, if you are out in the heat and therefore sweating, etc.

Staying hydrated is a key component of staying healthy, including keeping one of your most vital organs-your heart- in tip top shape.
